New Stem Cell Research Findings Could Lead to Cure of ALS!

Here is the link to the title story. Sounds promising, but what the lab-mouse-human transition time will be is anyone’s guess. I’ve read that it takes ten years on average to get a new drug to market. Let’s just hope and pray this is the answer, and the bureaucratic red tape stays minimal.

Here’s a story on a possibility for another home-brewed method for a hands-free computer interface that uses IR tracking with a webcam. However, the camera lens has to be covered with three blank photo negatives for the IR affect. Familiarity with the python programming language would probably also come in handy.

Found the visual aid below pretty interesting as a sign of the times.

On a more personal level, Cindy and I have begun a daily devotional reading from Prayers and Promises When Facing a Life-Threatening Illness (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2007). I’ve heard somewhere (@church?) that the most intimate thing a husband and wife can do together is prayer; what’s the expression? “A family that prays together…stays together”. I’ve been doing fairly well lately, despite my normal consisting of feeling tired most of the time plus the ongoing constipation. Van Products brought down a new 2010 Chrysler Town and Country Braun Entervan for me to look at this morning. Braun has managed to lower the floor even more in these newest wheelchair-accessible mini-vans, and more headroom is a huge plus for my size. There’s also more room to maneuver into my spot on the passenger side. We’ll have to see what kind of numbers they can give me for a trade-up.

Dynavox Eyemax, Milkshake Machine and the Cough Assist

Plenty new terminology around this “White house” these days, especially for Cindy, Maura and the caregivers. Received my Dynavox Eyemax eyegaze-controlled computer, sort of the boy scout knife of communication devices for PALS and others who have lost the means to communicate as well as the use of their hands, or expect to. I’m not [...]

Subject: Doctors

An Israeli doctor says, “Medicine in my country is so advanced that we can
take a kidney out of one man, put it in another, and have him looking for
work in six weeks.”

A German doctor says, “That is nothing; we can take a lung out of one
person, put it in another, and have him looking [...]

Once a tinkerer...

I’ve met some highly-skilled, mechanically-inclined people in my short time here…well, seems short anyway, but when I consider I’m closer to a “half-century”, YIKES! Never mind that…

I didn’t learn how clumsy I was with tools until Mr. Kraniak’s (real name) 9th(?) grade auto mechanics qualification test…something akin to tightening a nut on a bolt protruding [...]

Happenings and site updates

As Cindy and Maura clang away in the kitchen, organizing and cooking a meal for a close friend who recently had surgery, I’ve been hammering away at the dasher keyboard, attempting to clean up this site a bit…hoping someone notices. In addition to a cleaner look, I’ve added a link submission form, and began the [...]

iGive...do you??

I’ve found a simple way to raise money, every time I shop online or search the web, and I think you should check it out!

I’m using iGive.com to raise money for The ALS Association of NC, every time I shop online at any of their 774 participating stores. And when I search the web through iSearchiGive.com [...]

Live for the Moment

Looking forward to this new show on CBS tonight at 9:00. “Live for the Moment”, hosted by Jeff Probst of “Survivor”. Hopefully they’ll put enough emphasis on the real-life cruelty that ALS puts on about 30,000 American families at any given time to finally make a difference!

Sleep Apnea | EasyLife

Sleep Apnea | EasyLife. Philips Respironics has just introduced this new CPAP/BiPAP mask that they claim “readily adapts to facial contours to create an instant and self-adjusting seal, nearly eliminating the need for nose bridge and forehead pad adjustments“. That’s an uncomfortable pill to swallow Philips, but I’d be perfectly willing to review the product [...]

THANK YOU LORD!!!

It’s been one of those weeks. Started feeling a little throat irritation Tuesday night. Not too bothersome Wednesday, but by the time Thursday morning came, and time for my trip to the VA for a pulmonary function test, my throat was inflamed, which made me think it was my lungs, so I began thinking it [...]

For the moment...

This upcoming new show portrays normal people with a reason to “Live for the Moment”. This one has ALS…but how can we adopt such an attitude without having received such a disturbing wake-up call as is a most-feared diagnosis?
